In the western side of Parana, 390 miles from Curitiba, lies the remarkable " Iguassu National Park". The most impressive feature of this reserve is its famous waterfalls. There are 275, some as high as 260 feet, and they extend for a distance of 1/2 miles. There are the cataracts of the Iguassu, meaning "Great Waters". This falls straddle the border between Brazil and Argentina. On Brazil side the highlight is the point at which you cross the walkways leading the edge of the falls. With airborne water droplets creating colorful rainbows, the humidity here is such that it is impossible to stay dry. The Argentinean side offers views of spectacular "Devil's Throat", where the water thunders down from the height of 2,700 feet at a rate of some 390,000 cubic feet per second. The Iguassu National Park, which was established in 1939 and was listed by UNESCO as a Natural Heritage of Humanity in 1986. Of the total area of the Park, 185,000 hectares are on the Brazilian side and 55,000 hectares in Argentinean. This reserve has a particular rich fauna, with over three hundred species of birds, , including green woodpeckers, birds of prey, toucans and egrets; forty four species of mammals, including tapirs, capybaras, otters and jaguars; and over 1,400 species of butterfly.
Macuco Safari- On Brazilian side the Macuco Safari offers thrill-seekers the oportunity of a dramatic view of the cataracts from the river itself: an inflatable boat holding twenty five people is driven against the current up toward the " Devil Throat".
Itaipu Dam- Located 12 miles from Iguassu Falls lies the world's largest Hydroelectric Power Plan .The U$ 18 billian joint Brazilian-Paraguayan venture has the capacity to generate 18 millions kilowatts. The total concret used is this dam could pave a two-lane highway from Moscow to Lisbon.
Bird's Park- Bird watchers should definitely visit the aviaries in Parque das Aves, which display over 500 species of birds from South America and other continents.
