Lençóis

Built in the boom era of mining, a time of great wealth, Lençóis was known as the Diamond Capital. Declared a National Historical Monument in 1973, the city preserves colonial-style buildings from the end of the 19th century. With the end of the mining and the creation of the Chapada Diamantina National Park, tourism became a new source of wealth and development for the region. Lençóis is now the main tourist destination within the Chapada Diamantina. The city is located 412 Km from Salvador (5/6 hours drive) and has a well-developed infrastructure with the capacity to receive tourists from all over the world. There is an airport just 20 km from town, with weekly flights with TRIP airlines.

Chapada Diamantina

Chapada Diamantina is a mountainous region situated in the center of Bahia State and where almost all of the major rivers that drain directly east to the Atlantic Ocean are formed, such as Paraguaçu, Jacuípe, and Rio de Contas rivers. These waters tumble from the tops of the mountains and flow through the hills forming bubbling waterfalls and transparent natural pools. Many of the natural attractions of the region are quite fantastic, such as the Fumaça Waterfall with its 380 meters of free-falling water, or the magnificent Poço Encantado. There are so many attractions that you can chose to visit caves, swim under waterfalls, go trekking along the old mining trails, go horse-back riding, or practice adventure sports. Among its valleys and peaks the Chapada hosts esoteric and alternative communities such as Capão Valley. The two highest peaks in Bahia State are in the Chapada: the Barbado Peak at 2,080 meters (the tallest in all of northeastern Brazil) and the Almas Peak at 1,958 meters.
